“Ladies and Gentleman, the time has come”

20 Mar

The time has come. For the 2011 Women’s Basketball Tournament. Well, technically, it started yesterday but, today is the Dukes’ first game in the tournament.

The 11th seed Dukes playing against the 6th seed Oklahoma Sooners.

The Dukes are huge underdogs, as they should be. On ESPN’s Tournament Challenge, only 10.6% of people chose JMU to advance to the round of 32. Even President Obama chose the Sooners to come out on top. So, obviously, JMU has a lot to play for.

However, the Dukes have some pretty solid advantages.

1. Location– This game is at Charlottesville, which is only an hour from Harrisonburg. That means the Dukes will probably have a pretty good crowd advantage. Even though Oklahoma is considered the home team, JMU has the advantage being an hour away. If JMU fans from Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, and all over Virginia make it out to the game, the Dukes will have a big crowd advantage.

2. Oklahoma struggles on the road– The Sooners are 5-8 on the road. Most of those losses on the road were more than ten points. What do you make of this? Well, there’s one team traveling half across the country and another only taking an hour trip. Combined with the crowd advantage, the Sooners could struggle.

3. Points and rebounds- Dawn Evans, for us, is like Jimmer Fredette for BYU. Jimmer Fredette doesn’t play the game by himself and neither does Evans. While Evans does provide a lot of points, she can’t do everything. All five starters have something to show. As for rebounds, Lauren Jimenez is who you look for. In most games, she led the team in rebounds. Rebounds are just as important as points. So, it’s good that we have someone who can get rebounds.

Now, I’m not saying Oklahoma has nothing to show. Remember, Oklahoma are still the heavy favorite. However, if JMU could use their advantages, it could help them a lot.

CAA Champions…Again

After winning a CAA championship last year, the women’s basketball team comes back to win another CAA title.

The season started a little rough, but their amazing performance in CAA play made the Dukes a heavy favorite to win the CAA title. Now, they’ve won their sixth CAA title and is now on the road to another appearance in the NCAA tournament.

This is a JMU team that was ready and willing for this game and it shows.

However, it wasn’t easy. It seemed like late in the second half, Delaware was about to come back. JMU was still able to hold them off and secure the win and the CAA title.

Dawn Evans led the game with 24 points and Lauren Jimenez led the game in rebounds with 14.

Now, we’re headed to the NCAA tournament. The big question is: Who will we play? Well, we’re going to find out Monday night.

I want to see the Dukes make it past the first round of the tournament.

Congrats on the CAA title and good luck in the NCAA tournament. Go Dukes!!

We’re Going To The Finals

12 Mar

After a pretty easy win against Georgia State, the JMU Women’s Basketball team heads to the semifinals against VCU.

This was a game of ups and downs. However, we were able to come on top and get the 67-57 win to get a spot in the championship game.

JMU never let up the entire game. Even when they were down by 7 late in the first half, they still didn’t give up. They were down by five at halftime. However, the game was not over yet.

In the second half, JMU fully exploded and they were able to secure a 67-57 win.

In this crazy day of nothing but basketball, I’m glad it can start off with a good note. There’s a whole bunch of great games to come.

The Dukes are now heading to the finals. They will be playing either Delaware or UNCW, which are teams that JMU shouldn’t have a problem with.

Evans led the team in points with 2. Taylor and Jimenez led in rebounds with 10.

Cheer for the Dukes tomorrow in the CAA finals. We need this win more than ever.

A Terrible Loss At Richmond Plus A Look At The CAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

Devon Moore led the Dukes in points in today's disappointing loss against William and Mary (Courtesy: JMUsports.com)

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? Coming off a win against VCU, I thought the Dukes had a fighting chance against the Tribe. JMU has beaten them once on the road and had probably the worst home loss they’ve ever had this season. I thought JMU might be over what has setting them back this season.

Now, it’s obvious that the Dukes have no chance at making it to the NCAA tournament. Now, I starting to doubt if they’ll make it into the NIT. I still say the Dukes have a slight chance. However, losing the first game of the conference tournament is going to put us on the bubble for the NIT.

The leading scorer is Devon Moore with 22 points.

Now, only time will tell if the Dukes season ends here.

Now that we talked about that, let’s take a quick look at the 2011 CAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

The women’s team has a really big chance to win the CAA tournament and make it into the NCAA tournament. The conference championship begins next Thursday. However, since the Dukes are #1 in the CAA, they won’t play on Thursday. Instead, their first game is next Friday. They play the winner of the Georgia State/George Mason game.

It’s a pretty safe bet that JMU will beat either of these two teams.

There’s also a really big chance that the Dukes will make the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row.

So, my prediction is that JMU will win the CAA tournament and go to the NCAA tournament.

Anyway, good luck Dukes!

I’m Still Alive, Everybody

8 Feb

Hey guys!

I know I haven’t gotten any posts out lately. However, I’m going to make it up for it now.

2/2/11 MBB vs. William and Mary- Oh my god, was I disappointed. We already beat W&M once. I didn’t think they could play this badly. Lots of turnovers, lack of offensive rebounds, and not being able to make any baskets really killed us, especially when we were trailing only by three with less than a minute left. I didn’t even stay for the knockout game and neither did a lot of Dukes fans. However, they were still able to break the record so, I’m glad that they broke the record. Still, it was still a tough game to watch and it ended with a 73-67 loss.

2/5/11 MBB vs. VCU- I couldn’t really cover this game because I was doing more important stuff during while the game was going on. When I heard that the final score was only a 70-66 loss, I was kind of surprised. I didn’t think the score would be that close.¬† However, I was expecting a loss and nothing really surprised me here.

2/6/11 WBB vs. Old Dominion- Okay, this missing this one was entirely my fault. With the excitement of the Super Bowl and everything (by the way, GO PACKERS), I honestly forgot that there was a game, and that’s a big fail because there has always been a game on Sunday’s. Why would this one be different? Anyway, the women’s team is now playing like they never played at all this season. A great¬† 67-58 over ODU on Sunday now gave the Dukes the top spot in the CAA.

Now, I’m officially caught up. I’ll be back here tomorrow when the men’s team plays at Drexel. Tip-off is at 7pm ET.

JMU Women’s Team Wins At Drexel

27 Jan

The Drexel men’s team lost to JMU last night, so now its the Drexel women’s team’s turn to lose to JMU.

The first half was a little slow. Drexel was able to have the lead for a lot of the half. However, JMU was able to come back and move the momentum over to their side. Halftime score was 31-28 JMU.

The second half was also a little slow at the start. JMU didn’t really give Drexel the lead, but Drexel sure was close. The final score was 66-60 JMU

JMU improves to 14-6 with an 7-1 CAA record which is really amazing. The JMU women’s team has a shot at winning another CAA championship.

Their next game is Sunday when they play at Towson. Tip-off at 2pm ET.

A Better Day For Basketball

20 Jan

Coming off of the tough loss the men’s team had last night at ODU, the women’s team stepped up today at home against William and Mary.

Well, the first half was not what someone like me would have wanted. However, the Dukes still kept it really close and didn’t let it go out of hand. The halftime score was 35-31 W&M. Especially with only four points separating the two teams, you can’t say that this is over. In fact, this was only the beginning. Actually, the Dukes couldn’t shorten the lead 5 minutes into the half, but 7 points from Dawn Evans helped the Dukes take a huge 54-45 lead and there was still only 11 minutes left. The Dukes pulled away, Dawn Evans got her 100th double-digit game and the Dukes get the 72-59 win.

The Dukes now improve to 12-6. Their CAA record is 5-1 and when you have an amazing conference record, it overshadows the struggles during non-conference play. Remember when they were 5-5? Yeah, a great improvement.

Lauren Jimenez led the team in points today with 21 points.

The next game is Sunday at home against VCU. Tip-off at 2pm ET.
